When you purchase that house or condo with me and make it your home or investment, I don’t want that to be the end of our relationship.
I want it to be just the beginning. What I mean by that is, I’m here as your Realtor not just to show you houses and write an offer for you and help you through the escrow until you own it. I also want to support you throughout your ownership of that very important piece of asset, your Real Estate.
Very few people give any thought to these 2 little words, but they pack a punch in their meaning. The first word, Real, means that the type of property we are talking about here is Real Property, as opposed to Personal Property, and the Real part means that it is an immovable piece of earth. When you own that house on that piece of land, you are the only one who owns it and it cannot be moved. Unlike a car or furniture, which is what personal property is.
The second part of that word is Estate. Why is Real Property called an Estate? Because, you see, real estate in this part of the world is commonly held in a type of ownership called fee simple absolute, a permanent and absolute tenure of an estate in land with freedom to dispose of it at will. Put in more layman terms, a property is owned not just for the duration of your life, but its yours forever, and your ownership of it will even outlive you.
And that’s one of the things that is so amazing about real estate. It really is a long, long, long term investment.
Here’s where estate planning comes in.
I am so pleased to share with you that Jennifer Sawday, estate planning attorney and partner at TLD Law, LLP, will be coming to speak to you on Saturday July 20, 2019 to share with you her wealth of knowledge regarding trusts and estates, and how best to protect your assets for the long haul, not just for the duration of your life, but after that.
Jennifer is a fantastic attorney and speaker, and a bit about her background is that serves a wide range of clients in all matters related to probate, trusts, estate planning, conservatorships, guardianships, and related litigation. She also handles pre- and post-death administration for clients who serve as personal representatives, executors, and trustees for trusts and estates.
Jennifer’s approach to estate planning is thorough, personalized, informative, and caring. She works with individuals and families to make sure they first understand why estate planning is essential and then helps make it easy for them to complete the many moving parts of a sound estate plan. A comprehensive estate plan starts with a revocable living trust, which should be accompanied by pour over wills, durable powers of attorney, and advance health care directives for each client.
The next step is to determine what assets should become vested in the revocable living trust and how and why transfer those assets there. We understand that some of these are difficult decisions, but Jennifer encourages her estate planning clients to complete the entire process within a 4 to 6 week period.
