Estate planning is not a topic most of us like to think about – we like to think about living, not dying, right? I get that, and I absolutely feel the same way.
However, the truth is, we have worked hard to earn the money to purchase the home and investment properties that we have. And it just makes great sense to put your affairs in order so that you protect those hard-earned properties, and make sure the people who will inherit your property have the least amount of hassle and the most rights to your real estate.
One way I have heard it put is that when we get into a car, we don’t expect to get into a car accident, but we do put on a seat belt, right? Putting your property into a Trust is like putting on a seat belt – it protects you if something happens.
There’s a lot more to estate planning than the simplistic way I am putting it, and I want you to hear it directly from two estate planning attorneys, Jennifer Sawday and Paul Velasco who have generously agreed to come and speak to my clients and friends about this subject. I have chosen these two speakers because:
(1) They are specialists in estate planning and trusts;
(2) They are esteemed and well known in the community;
(3) I know them personally and recommend them to my clients for their estate planning and probate needs;
(4) I have heard them speak on the subject and they are excellent and will definitely contribute to your knowledge on this subject.
Here is the little bit about each of them:
Jennifer Sawday is a partner at TLD Law, LLP. She serves a wide range of clients in all matters related to probate, trusts, estate planning, conservatorships, guardianships—and related litigation. She also handles pre- and post-death administration for clients who serve as personal representatives, executors, and trustees for trusts and estates. Ms. Sawday’s approach to estate planning is thorough, personalized, informative, and caring. She works with individuals and families to make sure they first understand why estate planning is essential and then helps make it easy for them to complete the many moving parts of a sound estate plan.
Paul Velasco, founder of Velasco Law Group, APC. Paul has been practicing law for 20 years and focuses his practice exclusively on estate planning, probate and trust administration, and is well known as probate and trust litigator. He is fully certified as a specialist in estate planning, trust and probate law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization, a distinction held by less than one percent of all attorneys in California.
